Since I've nearly finished the stocking, I needed to start something new (never mind the vest that I need to sit down and figure out), so I decided to start the Sweater for your Head from Knitter's Winter 2000 issue. It's basically a mini Aran sweater closed at the top, with sleeves and everything. Very cute.

I was less than thrilled with the chain cast-on, which I'd never done before, and hope never to have to do again . . .

Sunday, December 15, 2002:

I bought a new knitting bag yesterday. My in-laws gave me some cash for my birthday, and I always try to actually buy something when someone gives me money, as opposed to paying the mortgage or buying groceries, you know, sticking it back in general circulation.

I have a Christmas Vera Bradley bag that I use in the winter, but it always seems a little nuts to use it in the summer, so I was thinking about getting a new VB bag, but I balk at the price--the Christmas one was acquired during a clearance sale at a department store a few years ago. I was in a Hallmark store yesterday, and they had a line called Quilted Keepers, obviously a VB knock-off, but very well made and something like 2/3 or less of the price of VB. So I got a medium-sized zippered tote bag exactly like the Christmas one I have, but this one is mostly ivory with some pale green and rose. Very pretty. One pocket on the outside, six pockets inside, and long handles that fit over my shoulder.

I finished the Sock Monkey stocking, except for grafting the toe and heel, which I'll probably do this evening. I'll also have to take a picture of it--it's pretty big and floppy; I'm considering felting it, although I doubt I'll have enough nerve. I guess I should block it before I decide. It was fun to knit, but I'm not crazy about the way it came out.
