I'd put the vest away since Saturday, but finally brought it to work with me today and spent my lunch hour trying to figure it out. Well, there hasn't been much "figure out" yet--just ripping out. I tried to carefully un-knit a row, but I couldn't figure out where I was, so I ripped it back several rows until I could tell where I was. So now I'm going to re-knit another inch or so until I get to a good stopping place, then I'll try dividing it again.
The dividing it isn't the problem, of course, it's the carrying on after the dividing . . .

We went away for the weekend--a road trip--and I finished the shawl in a couple of marathan knitting-in-the-car sessions. I just need to miter the corners and block it.
After I finished the shawl, I made the mistake of trying to work on the vest in the car. I was at the point of dividing it for the two fronts and the back, and the directions aren't actually very good because they tell you to bind off some stitches "at the beginning of the next row," but they don't say whether that's supposed to be the armhole side or the front opening side, and I'm pretty sure I did it wrong. Also, I have to stay in pattern--sort of an alternating basketweave--and I'm going to have to sit down with pencil and paper and figure out how to do that when I'm starting a pattern repeat at what is basically the middle of a row.
So I ended up ripping out about a half dozen rows, and now I've got to try to figure out where I am. This is the part that is not fun.
