I ripped out the shawl again. I decided that the garter stitch border wasn't going to be the firm edge I was looking for, so I ripped it out and started over with a K1P1 rib, and I think I like it much better. We'll see, I guess. It's going pretty fast, anyway. Just think how far I'd be if I hadn't started over three times . . .

I hated the shawl. Hated it. If I'd seen the pattern close-up, I wouldn't have ordered it. It's garter stitch, which has the possibility of being interesting occasionally, but not in light beige, and not with these big (size 11) needles. I kept on through the first skein, hoping I'd grow to love it, then I hit the yarnover row and started making the holes, and I hated it.

So I ripped it out. I went ahead and started over, making a four row garter stitch border and the interior in stockinette; I haven't decided yet if I'll finish it that way or just rip it all out again and look for a better pattern.

Oh well. That's what I get for ordering a pattern online that I couldn't really see (and without any indication of what the stitch pattern was--it didn't look like garter stitch in the little catalog picture).

Sunday, September 15, 2002:

I started the shawl. I really didn't mean to, it just happened. I was putting together a knitting care package for my friend Misty, who moved to New York a few weeks ago and wants to learn to knit. I fully intended to teach her before she left, but we just never got together, so now I'm going to try to do my best long distance.

So, in order to have a box to put her yarn and needles, etc., into, I had to open the Patternworks box with the yarn and needles for the shawl, and once I opened it, well, I sort of had to start it, and before I knew it, I had four rows done which, since it's worked end-to-end, is not insignificant.

But I figure since I'm carrying the vest with me to work and doing a few rows at lunchtime, I might as well have something that I leave at home, and it's (the shawl) pretty mindless knitting, while the vest involves a lot of counting, i.e., not quite as well suited for television knitting. And the shawl will get pretty big pretty quickly, so I won't want to carry it around . . . All justification for starting another project before the others are finished. Ah well.
