Tell pharmacy chains to stop discriminating against women!

I just signed a Petition directed at several large pharmacy chains regarding policies that allow pharmacists employed by these chains to decide whether or not to fill legal prescriptions based on their (the pharmacist's) moral beliefs. The medication in question is, of course, birth control, but in my mind, that isn't the real issue.

If a medication is legally prescribed by a physician, I believe that pharmacies should be required by law to fill the prescription. If a pharmacist has a moral objection to selling a legal medication, then in my opinion, they need to find another line of work.

I agree.

I diasgree. They should however suggest somewhere else where you can get you prescription filled.

Peoples moral beliefs should be respected

I think people's beliefs should be respected, too, but if they work in a legal workplace, and are asked to perform a legal action, then I believe they should do it, or, as I said, find another job.

Isn't it like going into a bookstore and taking a book about, oh, witchcraft, up to the counter, and being told by the clerk that they don't believe in witchcraft, so they refuse to sell you the book?

Or going into a library and trying to check something out, and being told that the librarian refuses to check it out to you because she thinks the book is morally wrong?

Or going into a restaurant and ordering steak, and being served by a vegetarian waitress who tells you that it's wrong to eat meat, and she's not going to sell it to you?

That's my point. If you can't morally do the things that your job requires, then find something you can do without forcing your beliefs on the public.

That's all I'm saying.

Thank you for the great examples. I have tried dealing with this for several years with my insurance company and the pharmacies. In my case a script for BCP had to be approved through several channels because that's not why they were needed. Privacy laws say that the only people concerned with my medical status is myself and my physician. Why should all these other people have to know what my problem is and even if I did want them for their normally intended purpose, why do these others get to decide if that's ok?
