J-Pop

I don't know a single guy who wouldn't watch a VH-1 Behind the Music episode about this. All the gay guys would look for the catty back stabbing and the hot pink outfits. All the straight guys would tune in for the opportunity for a 15-way Japanese all-girl make-out session. With sword fighting afterwards.

little. yellow. different.

Comments

In the process of making a minor change to this template, I discovered that I had configured the comments function to only allow "registered users" to comment. I didn't explore it further, so I'm not sure what that means, exactly, but I changed it so that "anyone" can post comments. So if you tried before and were unable to post, try, try again!

For a vital center

And then what's all this squabbling about 'torture memos'? Republicans want torture. Democrats want no torture. Where in this debate is there any place for a good decent centrist who can split the difference and bring the nation together over the principle of some torture?

Site Feed

I just had never gotten around to creating an feed for this site, but on the prompting of Mike Duffy, created one tonight. He said he had started using Bloglines, and actually, I had played around with it some the other night, too, but had forgotten about it.

Anyway, if you want to syndicate this site, the address is http://www.willa.com/weblog/atom.xml. I think. :)

FWiC :: Cooking is a Piece of Cupcake

For my birthdays, I liked to have a strawberry cake for my home birthday cake, and I liked my mom to make special cupcakes for me to take to school. These cupcakes were chocolate and they had a special cream cheese mix in the center and I thought these cupcakes were sure to make me popular because everyone would like them so much that it would be a natural progression for them to then like me.

Icon Maker

Mike Duffy sent me this a while back: Abi-Station. I hadn't taken the time to make one--the reason it's cool (its detail) is also the reason it takes forever to make one. Here's one from the Portrait Illustration Maker:

and one from the Portrait Icon Maker:

Both at least somewhat accurate. I especially like the little one on the bench -- that's me sitting outside my office in the sun.

Gmail is too creepy

Interesting article setting out the reasons its author won't respond to anyone who sends mail from a Gmail account: Gmail is too creepy.

Tim O'Reilly talks about it, too, but he's in favor of it.

Brad Templeton, Chairman of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, talks about it as well. He's not quite as dewy-eyed about it as O'Reilly.

I haven't quite made up my mind about it, but my opinion, at least right now, is closer to the "Gmail is too creepy" people. When they first made the announcement, I thought it was an April Fool's joke, and I had a hard time believing it was true. A gigabyte of mail storage? And they can search through it and deliver targeted ads based on content? It just seemed impossible. Of course, many things that once seemed impossible are completely possible now, and I try not to be too stick-in-the-mud about things.

And I'm an early adopter for most things, although less now than I used to be. I'm still running Mac OS 9, for instance. But in general, I'm in favor more privacy rather than less, and in favor of privacy at the expense of convenience. I'm sure it's one of those things that we won't think anything about before long, but right now I think I'll pass.

Oh, I do have an account. I figured I ought to grab it when I was given the chance. But I'm holding off on my recommendation until I see what actually happens with it.

Poor bear

ROCKY MOUNT, Va. - Perhaps visiting hours were over. Police shot and killed a full-grown black bear that wandered into a hospital Tuesday.

The 300-pound male bear wandered in front of Carilion Franklin Memorial Hospital at about 9:10 p.m. and activated a sensor that opens the hospital's doors, police said.

The bear wandered down a few hallways and into a computer room . . .

Or maybe he just wanted to check his Gmail.

BugMeNot

This is excellent! A site that provides generic logins to sites where you may not want to register and provide personal information: BugMeNot.com. You enter in the URL of the site that you want to access, and it gives you a log-in to use. I always give fake information anyway, but this is slicker -- prevents you having to register at all, fake information or not.

Found in a CNN article about newspapers requiring you to register in order to read their stories online: Complaints over online newspaper registration.

Turn your PC into a Mac

Via BoingBoing: Turn your PC into a Mac. I don't need it any more since I have an actual Mac, but when I only had a PC, I was obsessed with trying to make it look like a Mac. Kind of sad, really.

Nice description of marriage:

I am much more drawn to slightly fanciful, magical metaphors to describe marriage. Nine years ago, LT and I (metaphorically) drew a circle in the sand, stood inside it, and agreed that it existed and would always exist, agreed to move it out of the reach of the tide if necessary, and agreed to throw really kick-ass bonfires inside of it.

the kansas city BLOGstar

From a blog started by the Kansas City Star reporter who wrote the story about bloggers quoted in the post below:

The FYI cover, still being designed late Wednesday afternoon. If you look very closely, you can see that the "WARNING" label (some blogs contain adult content) was on top of my byline. I thought this seemed like a warning that the story itself was dirty. Which I kinda liked, considering it might get more people to read.

WILLA CLINE (Willa.com): She's been blogging since 1995, which in Internet years was forever ago. The former legal secretary started her site to teach herself Web design. She has both a journal and a weblog on her main site (the blog mainly points to links), as well as four other Web sites (one is "Knitting Zen"). Knowing that strangers are reading about her day-to-day life doesn't bug her. "It would probably bother me more if I knew my family was going in and reading it every day." Her husband reads in weekly chunks.

wish jar journal: shifting

So true, so very true:

7. "Pay no attention to the man behind that curtain." Ignore what other people are doing. It has no bearing on your existence or vision of the world. The times we feel the most discouraged are usually due to the fact we are comparing ourselves to others. Most times reading awards annuals, and industry mags only serves to make us feel inadequate. Try cutting it out entirely. Designer Bruce Mau recommends not entering awards competitions. His reasoning, “Just don’t do it, it’s not good for you.”
