Woman Charged with Cruise Ship Threat

A 20 year old woman was angry because her family forced her to go on a cruise with them rather than letting her stay home with her boyfriend, so she wrote notes threatening to kill everyone on board:

The cruise ship was on a 10-day trip out of Ensenada, Mexico, when crew members found two handwritten notes on April 22 and 23, according to the charges. Both notes stated that if the ship docked in a U.S. port, the nearly 2,400 passengers and crew would all die.

After the second note was found, authorities diverted the ship to Oahu waters and a 120-member task force of federal, state and military personnel searched the ship and interviewed people on board.

The ship was searched for biological, chemical, radiological and explosive weapons, but nothing was found and the ship's cruise resumed on April 24. But Ferguson confessed the following day during an interview, Kubo said.

"The defendant said that she never wanted to go on this cruise with her family and that she wrote these notes hoping that it would shorten her time on the cruise, thereby allowing her to rejoin her boyfriend in Orange County, California," Kubo said.

Eww

There are nine versions of each reproduced image, from Standard Numbered editions, for a few hundred dollars, to Studio Proofs that feature a textured canvas, more highlighting and Kinkade's machine-etched signature — compete with his DNA, courtesy of mixing the ink with the painter's hair and blood.

The weirdest thing about it is that this article (an old one from USA Today) doesn't comment on that in any way. They mix the ink for the signatures with his blood? Eww.

From a post in Tiny Pineapple. He posts an ad for a "Thomas Kinkade sitting on a tractor" sculpture. I guess he must not have seen the one I saw, a sculpture of a semi truck with a TK painting on the side. Yikes.

The BINK Poll: Only five Americans still oppose war

In a shocking find, 23 percent of those who changed their mind said they did so because they believe Saddam Hussein is responsible for SARS, the sudden acute respiratory syndrome that is now the only other important news this year. "I heard on Fox News some story about Saddam," a respondent representing 20 million Americans said. "Then I changed channels and they were talking about SARS. That's too scary a connection!"

SARS Epidemic

Interesting article in the Independent about SARS in Toronto:

Professor Liu had been treating patients with a strange, pneumonia-like illness in the Guangdong province of southern China. A single sneeze in the Metropole's lift lobby may have been enough to infect seven other people who subsequently spread the illness round the world. One of them was Kwan Sui-Chu.

10 Plagues Activity

At first glance, I thought this must be satire, but I guess not.

A fun activity to represent the ten plagues can be reenacted. Ten days before Passover begins, do something in your home to represent each one of the ten plagues. Here are a few examples. Be creative and make up your own symbols.

1. Nile waters turning to blood --put red food coloring in the water glasses at the dinner table, in the bathroom sinks, in the dog's water bowl, and anywhere else you can think of.

Authentic reproduction

Of course, as soon as I raised the question of the Iraqi "Most Wanted" playing cards, they started appearing everywhere. There are several hundred auctions on Ebay, and every morning I get five or six emails from people wanting to sell me sets. This morning there were several offering "authentic reproductions" of the playing cards: "This set is an authentic reproduction of the cards issued by the U.S. Government." As I was going through my inbox, clicking, "Delete, delete, delete," I actually had to go into the Trash folder to read that one again and see if I'd read it correctly. What makes a reproduction "authentic," anyway, I wonder?

Tax return

I know I'm a bit pedantic about language, but at this time of year, this one really annoys me: you file a tax return with the government. If you paid in too much money, they give you a refund. You don't get a "return." The "return" is what you file. A "refund" is what you get.

Bonne Bell Heritage

I discovered Bonne Bell Direct after I complained to Bob about being almost out of my favorite (only, really) makeup--Bonne Bell Sheer Glow, which I've used for years and which is no longer available in stores.

When it started getting scarce, I bought up all I could find, then at some point I called Bonne Bell and they still had some in the warehouse, so I ordered a bunch, but my stock is getting low and I didn't imagine that they'd still have it. But Bob suggested that I look on line, and I found this site. I ordered ten tubes.

So if you've been looking all over for some Colorado Sage cologne, or Shower 2000, or any other Bonne Bell products that have been discontinued, take a look.

Playing cards

I mentioned the Iraqi "most wanted" playing cards to a friend of mine who is an ex-Marine, and he shrugged and said they perform two jobs, which I suppose is true--boredom relief for the soldiers, and familiarity with the people they're supposed to be looking for. Also, I wonder how long it will be before we see them up for sale on Ebay?

Real blog?

I'm a fan of Chris' [Pirillo's] blog and link to it on my site, and I asked if he might like to reciprocate and link to mine as well. Well, lemme tell you, that Chris is one hard-core blogger. He took one look at my blog and said he'd only link to it once it's a "real" blog. That is to say once it's powered by blogging software such as Movable Type and includes a Talkback feature where visitors can post feedback.

Hm.

Iraqi playing cards

In case you heard the story about the Iraqi "Most Wanted" playing cards and thought, like me, that the term "playing cards" was just a euphemism for the way they were printed, well, no. They are actual playing cards, and you can download a pdf of them from the Department of Defense. I'm not sure how I feel about this.

The Reason Why

A good article in "The Nation" by George McGovern: The Reason Why

The President frequently confides to individuals and friendly audiences that he is guided by God's hand. But if God guided him into an invasion of Iraq, He sent a different message to the Pope, the Conference of Catholic Bishops, the mainline Protestant National Council of Churches and many distinguished rabbis--all of whom believe the invasion and bombardment of Iraq is against God's will.

Genovese boss Gigante ends insanity charade

In an article about Vincent Gigante, who run[s] the Genovese crime family:

The other New York crime families are the Gambinos; the Bonannos; the Colombos; and the Lucheses.

I don't know, that just surprised me. That it's something you can say so matter-of-factly.

Amazon update

I emailed Amazon customer service to complain about the foregoing review in particular, and reader reviews in general, and I got an email back from them this morning that they will remove the offending review. I haven't checked, they said might take a few days, but that it would be removed. They also said that they do, to the extent of their ability, exert some editorial control over reviews. Obviously, with the enormity of the site, they can't do it alone, so I would encourage anyone who runs across a review that gives away the ending of a book, or that is obviously not intended to give a fair and useful review of a book, to report it to Amazon.

Amazon.com: Books: A Well-Known Secret

Damn it. I should know better by now than to read Reader Reviews at Amazon. I love Amazon, I buy a lot of books there, but when they have no control over what readers write, there's nothing to stop someone from giving away the entire point of a book, which is what the first review of this book just did: A Well-Known Secret. What is wrong with people? Do they figure once they've read a book, no one else matters? Why not give away the whole damn plot, why don't you?

Sperm Turned on by Lily of the Valley

Human sperm become excited when exposed to the scent of lily of the valley, doubling their speed and homing in on the aroma, a German scientist said on Wednesday.

Interesting. I was going to say, "Shall we expect a big run on Lily of the Valley perfume?" but then realized that that's only if you want to get pregnant, I guess. So are all the perfume makers who make Lily of the Valley saying, "Damn! We've got to change our advertising?" And instead of young lovers being drawn together by the woman's perfume, they're intercut by a contraceptive ad or something? Funny.
