Here are some ideas on how to keep your website fresh and exciting.

  • Write a monthly (or more often) update letter to post on your website. Most authors that I do websites for write monthly update letters to their readers, giving news on upcoming release dates, information about public appearances and book signings, and anecdotes about their personal lives.

These updates keep their readers interested between books, and create a relationship between the reader and the writer.

  • Consider posting preview chapters of recently published or upcoming books. With book prices as high as they are now, it sometimes feels like a major commitment to buy a paperback book. If a reader can find a chapter or two online for free, they may be more likely to buy the book once they know they'll like it.

In a similar vein, if you have unpublished short stories or articles that haven't found a home, consider publishing them on the web. You could post a new short story each month, then take it down at the end of the month, to be replaced by the new one.

This brings readers back again and again to see what's new, and by not archiving old stories, people know they have to come back each month or they'll miss one.

  • Create a section at your website about your hobbies. Do you collect postcards? Do needlework? Paint? Have some of your work scanned and create a page showcasing your work. Everyone likes to see the private person behind the public face, and in addition to giving your visitors some insight into your personality, it gives them another reason to come back. It can also get your site into more categories in the search engines, thus garnering more visitors.

You can also turn your artwork--photographs or paintings, for example--into ecards. People love to send free online postcards to their friends, and their friends visit the site to pick up the cards thus, you guessed it, bringing more visitors to your site.
