What We Carry
***

When I say "what we carry" I mean that literally. My service dog, Homer, has been my bearer for over 5 years and I've mostly gotten out of the habit of carrying a purse, except maybe a backpack for heavy stuff or if I leave the dog at home. He's mostly retired now, so this happens more and more, but I haven't found just the right bag yet. Got this great big velvet sack at a thrift store which is neat, but nothing beats the class of the dog bearing my stuff about town in his packs.\

Anyway, what's he carrying?

  • My electronic organizer, with all those vital phone numbers, the appointments, for making short notations of story ideas, poem starts, etc
  • A small notebook for much the same purpose and a big fat pen, if i can get one.
  • A portable phone amplifier
  • A paperback for reading at busstops & in waiting rooms ( something light, usually a mystery-- these days Patricia Moyes or Steve Allen)
  • A slip leash and some dog biscuits, in case we meet up with a friendly stray
  • Emergency funds of an undisclosed amount
  • His own supplies: A small bottle of peroxide, a collapsible bowl, plastic baggies and his i.d./emergency medical card. If we're traveling in unknown territory, I may include a bottle of water for him, too.

It seems a good thing I have a large dog who is very fit. I carry my own cash & id in a back pocket. I don't have enough of a financial life for more. If I'm on a writing expedition to the library or something, I'll carry my own bag, with the project file I'm working on & a larger notebook.
