Am I the only person who carries an umbrella every day, rain or shine? I have one in the bag I carry to work (a canvas tote from the first quilt how I ever attended), and another I keep under the front seat of the car. Also in my canvas tote - the keys to the office on a lanyard in case I need to leave my desk in the middle of the day so I don't have to carry everything away with me, my planner, any files that have to go home with me, my lunch, a book or magazine (today it's the most recent National Geographic) and my handbag. Sometimes I have needlework in there instead of the book. My handbag is new - I finally gave up the one my daughter bought me for Christmas five years ago, the first Christmas she bought presents with money she earned herself, that was perfect and very sentimental and also very ratty. The new bag is black leather, with three small zipper compartments - one is a wallet compartment where I carry money, credit cards, driver's license, and all the other stupid cards one must carry - library, supermarket discount (3 different), medical insurance, video store, Hallmark Gold Crown, and a few others. I wish I could do as mycollege age daughter does and carry one identification card that is good for everything, in the dining hall, the laundry, bookstore, everywhere! I hate carrying all those dumb cards! In the largest zipper compartment I carry a hanky (I wash it when I use it, honest!), my lipstick and plain chapstick, my car keys (there is a little penknife and a measuring tape on the ring with them) and the keys to my mom's house on separate keyrings, and my glasses (eye- and sun-). In the last compartment I carry a minicalculator, my coupons, and a pen and notepad. I also carry a little greeting my son made for me when he was a little boy, probably 10 years ago - it is a tiny scrap of paper on which he drew a little heart and wrote I Love You. When I run across it in the midst of a search for something, my heart does a little flipflop and I am a little happier. All this is really much less that I used to carry. Recently I have been trying to pare down even more, and have discovered that I really can leave the house with just my car keys, a few dollars and my driver's license stuck in my pocket, and a chapstick (gotta have chapstick!). It's very liberating to do that once in a while!
