Sunday, November 11, 2001: Something to look forward to

It was a beautiful day here today. I don't know what the temperature was, but probably in the 70's, anyway. I wore shorts and a t-shirt, and started out with a jacket, but took that off pretty quickly. I just did a few errands: went to the office supply store for index cards and pens and a toner cartridge for Bob's fax machine, and went to Bath & Body Works for a tube of handcream and some shower gel, then washed the car and came home in mid-afternoon.

I've been a terrible procrastinator as far as planting the bulbs I bought a few weeks ago. I keep thinking I'll do it, then the weekend comes and goes (and I've been busy doing other things, it's not like I've just been lying around), and it doesn't get done.

I did plant the paperwhites for forcing inside a couple of weeks ago; I know I really didn't do it right, I didn't put them back outside or in a dark closet or anything for months and months . . . I'm not sure what will happen, but they look like they're getting ready to bloom right now. Maybe they won't, but I decided I just wanted to see what would happen. That's the mystery and beauty of bulbs.

Well, and of seeds, too, I suppose--anything that you plant in the ground and wait to see what happens.

I had a bag of crocus bulbs that I'd bought, too. I love crocuses, but I bought them mostly because they were cheap. I think it was a bag of thirty or so. I thought I might plant them out in the front yard around the tree, but after I thought about it, I thought it might look dumb, since crocuses are so short. And they're small, and thirty is probably really not enough. They would be pretty sparse.

So I decided to force them, too, and I planted them this afternoon in a variety of pots I had out in the garage. One of them I'd completely forgotten about--a little cream-colored Dutch "wooden" shoe that I can't remember where I got. It could have been my grandmother's, it's from that era, but more likely I bought it at a flea market or garage sale. Whichever it was, it was a lovely find to plant a few bulbs in. There's also white pot with blue Dutch images on it, which I think I'll take to the office to sit on my windowsill. I'm trying to take advantage of the window. The ivy loves it.

I can't open the blinds in the mornings, though, the glare is too much. I always open them when I get back from lunch. It's something to look forward to.
