It must have been a year or more ago when I first discovered
Africam. I
would sometimes sit up late at night watching one or another
of the cameras, or clicking between different ones, hoping to
catch a glimpse of an animal. It became something of an
obsession, but animal sightings were few and far between, and
I eventually lost interest.
Something made me remember it again last week, though, and when
I visited I saw that they've changed the site quite a bit, both
in design and in the number and quality of the cameras. And,
apparently, the placement, because now you can hardly view one
of the cameras without seeing a whole herd of animals.
Of course, maybe it's the time of year, or the weather--maybe
it's drier than it was last summer, and more animals are visiting
the watering holes. Whatever the reason, there seems to be a
plethora of gorgeous animals viewable through the cameras, and
it's threatening to become an obsession again, although I suppose
it's lucky that Africa is on the other side of the world from me
and most of their daylight hours are during the time I'm
sleeping.
They also have "Drive Cams," which appear to be (I
haven't spent all that much time looking around the site
lately, or reading the information, just looking at the
beautiful animals) cameras mounted on trucks or jeeps that
are either driving around doing what they normally do or
driving around looking for animals. I'm not clear on that.
But they do get some lovely close-up shots of the animals.
I even got a shot of a baby elephant, although I apparently
missed the one of the elephants mating, which was the
shot of the day one day last week. I don't think I really
mind.
