Willa's Journal

I paid bills last night, and I finally used up the last of my old checks, which were a design of autumn leaves, a design I've used for several years. I always look at the new check designs, but I always choose something pretty innocuous since Bob uses them, too. Misty ordered superhero checks last week, and they were cool, but I'm not sure Bob would think they were cool . . . I wouldn't have ordered superhero ones anyway, but I might have ordered ones with colorful coffee cup designs on them. That (cups) seems to be a theme of mine.

Anyway, what I ended up ordering were "Spirit of Africa" checks from Current. I showed them to Misty last week when we were looking at the site, and she said they were very "Willa-like," and I agree.

I haven't been going out to lunch lately. I've been bringing my lunch and eating at my desk, then writing or going out to walk a little bit for the rest of my lunch hour.

Today, even though it was snowing and cold, it sounded good to get out, so I went with everyone to KFC. We eventually got there, but it was quite an adventure. As we drove down the street toward the restaurant, we could see lots of flashing lights ahead and assumed that there was an accident. As we got closer, we saw that the street was actually closed, so we turned and went down another block, intending to cross over. The street was closed there, too, and streets were closed for several blocks.

We were finally able to get close to where we were going by parking and then walking up a block, and as we approached we saw television crews set up in the intersection, and several ambulances and dozens of police cars all over the place. I remarked to someone, "That must be some accident," and although I really tried not to look, it was hard not to. There was nothing to see, though, just lots and lots of emergency vehicles, and lots of police and firefighters standing around. We were stopped by a policeman, who asked us where we were going, and when we said we were going to KFC, told us to go ahead.

Still wondering what in the world could be going on, we went into the restaurant, which was empty of customers except for one man sitting at a table with a cup of coffee, complaining because the buses weren't running.

The girl working the counter said that there had been a package containing anthrax delivered to the Planned Parenthood office up the street and the area was quarantined. Except, apparently, for the fast food restaurants . . .

Later . . .

The anthrax scare was apparently a hoax; I forgot to watch the news tonight, but someone's mother called today at work and said that she saw a news item about it, and it wasn't real. So apart from the people whso had to be decontaminated, the people who were frightened and inconvenienced, the thousands of dollars spend on medical equipment and personnel, the buses that couldn't run their regular routes because they were taking potentially injured people to hospitals, the police pulled away from other duties to barricade the streets for blocks around, and the people who were trapped in their apartments and businesses for the afternoon, no harm done.

I'm not sure what prompted me, but this morning I was thinking about those "Desert Island" lists that people make of their favorite books and music. Oh, I guess I do remember--it was a short story I was reading last night that was otherwise fairly unmemorable. I read a book a few months ago called "High Fidelity" by Nick Hornsby, in which the protagonist worked in a record store; he and his friends were always making "Top 5" lists: "Top 5 films," "Top 5 albums," "Top 5 album tracks," etc., etc., and "Top 5 songs you would like to have played at your funeral," or something like that.

So this morning when I got up I made a list. I wanted to make a list of films, too, but that was difficult, since I don't see many. Most of mine would have been old, which would have been okay, I guess, and maybe I'll do that another day.

In no particular order:

Desert Island Albums

  • Lips Against the Steel - David Knopfler
  • Lifelines - David Knopfler
  • Marc Cohn - Marc Cohn
  • Jack's Crows - John Gorka
  • Pet Sounds - The Beach Boys
  • Rumour & Sigh - Richard Thompson
  • Man of Colours - Icehouse
  • Fruitcakes - Jimmy Buffett
  • God Shuffled His Feet - Crash Test Dummies
  • Robbie Robertson - Robbie Robertson

Desert Island Books

  • Ladder of Years - Anne Tyler
  • The Stand - Stephen King
  • Four Past Midnight - Stephen King
  • Someplace to be Flying - Charles de Lint
  • War for the Oaks - Emma Bull
  • Reservation Blues - Sherman Alexie
  • 365 Tao - Ming-Dao Deng
  • Ahead of All Parting - Rainer Maria Rilke (translated by Stephen Mitchell)
  • Winnie the Pooh - A. A. Milne
  • Living Juicy - Sark

Songs to play at my funeral:

  • At My Funeral - Crash Test Dummies (from "The Ghosts that Haunt Me")
  • I Will Always Be - David Knopfler (from "Lifelines")
  • What a Crying Shame - The Mavericks (from "What a Crying Shame")

or maybe

  • There Goes My Heart - The Mavericks

And something from Richard Thompson, but there are so many that would be appropriate that it's hard to choose one. Maybe

  • At the Dimming of the Day - Richard and Linda Thompson

But definitely

  • Saving the Best for Last - Marc Cohn

You can go a hundred miles a second
Don't have to drive no lousy cab
Got everything you want and more, man
and the King picks up the tab.
You walk around on streets of gold all day
And never have to listen to what these customers say, and I know
They're saving the best for last . . .

~ Marc Cohn - "Saving the Best for Last"

Suggestions?

I've been playing fetch with Pyewacket tonight until I feel like I'm going to lose my mind. I don't think I'd make a very patient mother.

Bob's supposed to come home tonight from Phoenix; his flight was originally scheduled to get in at 11:30, but he called earlier to say that it was delayed because of the weather on this end--we got about six inches of snow today. I just (10:15) called the airline and she said the flight is scheduled to get in around 12:15 a.m., but she couldn't confirm at this point whether or not it had left the ground. I guess I'll call again in an hour or so and see. I'm sure I'll be in wonderful shape for work tomorrow . . .
