SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Astronomers rely on
telescopes to gather the observations that serve as their raw
material. Not all their time is spent gazing up at the heavens,
however. They have plenty of opportunities to work on "cloudy
night problems," interpreting and massaging their data when the
skies are overcast. I'd like to suggest that you're in an analogous
phase, Sagittarius. At least for the moment, you can't glean any
more crucial clues from peering outward into the glittering
sprawl around you. Everything you need to know is contained
within the observations you have already made and the
information you've already registered.

I like that idea: cloudy night problems. Things to work on when the sky is overcast. I
need to think about that one and put it into perspective.
I finally put new desktops up. Retro this
time; I was having a hard time finding anything interesting, but wanted a change. So
I went with more of a "wallpaper" feel. They're from Pixel
Decor, along with snowglobe icons.
Last night I started Michael Swanwick's Bones
of the Earth, and I like it so far. It's about a paleontologist presented with the
opportunity of going back in time to study the dinosaurs in their own environment.
I always like time travel books, even though I
realize it's impossible far-fetched. (I'm very wary of saying that
anything is impossible.) Swanwick is also the author of SciFi.com's Periodic Table of Science
Fiction. I especially liked this week's installment, "Lead:"
I walked into Winkler's office with a smile and a nod. Then I shot him in the knee. He
shrieked and fell over sideways, clutching his leg. From the floor he glared up at me.
"What did you do that for?"
"To convince you I mean business."
So in addition to the difficulties with books, I'm having a hard time eating. Not eating,
per se, but my stomach has been upset a lot. Probably partly stress, but I've always
been somewhat sensitive about the things I eat, and I think I've been eating too much rich
stuff lately. Especially Bob's hollandaise sauce, which is so wonderful, and so hard
to resist . . . I can't remember what else I ate
over the weekend that bothered me, maybe just all those eggs.
Anyway, I've decided I really need to get back to a simpler diet, so I boiled a bunch of
pasta Sunday night and fixed lunches for all week--macaroni, tomatoes and white beans with
a little V-8 juice thrown in, and jello for dessert. Yogurt and granola for breakfast.
More pasta for dinner--spaghetti and plain tomato sauce last night, with a little French
bread. Bob will be out tonight, so I might stop and get a salad.
