Sunday, February 11, 2001: Out of step

Normally I spend both Saturday and Sunday running errands around town--going to the grocery store, the drug store, the post office, the bank, getting the car washed, etc., etc., all the things that I can't get done during the week.

Yesterday I did that--I got my hair cut, colored and deep conditioned--washed twice, went to the post office and the grocery store, went to Bed, Bath & Beyond, Borders, and Bath & Body Works, and the bank. I had a great time wandering around and getting stuff done, and made a plan that today, Sunday, I'd stay home.

I bought ground turkey and made spaghetti last night for dinner, then made chili today--I forgot to get onions, so I feared I was going to have to go out, but I found a small one under the sink that was just fine.

I spent about three hours playing The Sims mid-day, then heated up leftover spaghetti for my lunch, and put some laundry in. I've been doing laundry all day, interspersed with watching "It Could Happen to You," the one where Nicolas Cage is the good-hearted New York cop who wins the lottery and promises half of it to the broke waitress. I'd never seen it before; it was okay. Certainly no surprises, but enjoyable.

I also addressed Valentine cards and paid bills, made a drugstore.com vitamin order, cut the cats' claws, and read a little bit. All in all, a very nice day.

I had received a certificate from Bath & Body Works in the mail a week or so ago--spend $25 and get $10 off. I tend to get all excited about anything free, then read the fine print later, but this one didn't seem to have any downside--I like their stuff, and buy it sometimes even when it isn't on sale, so it seemed like a good deal.

My favorite Bath & Body Works fragrance is Vanilla Bean which, of course, they have now discontinued.

The last time I was in there--around Christmas, I think--I noticed that they had a new fragrance, Warm Vanilla Sugar, I think it was called, and that the Vanilla Bean stuff was back by the stockroom door all by itself.

I saw the writing on the wall, and was tempted to buy it all up, but I convinced myself that I was being paranoid, that I can't just buy everything in case they stop making it, and so I bought one tube of shower cream, which I've now used up.

When I went in yesterday, I couldn't find Vanilla Bean, not in the regular shelves, or in the back, where they'd put it last time. I asked one of the clerks, and she said yes, it had been discontinued.

I don't know why I bother. Every time I find a brand or fragrance that I love, it will eventually be discontinued. Bob has this theory that manufacturers should hire me to test their products--if I love it, don't make it, because no one else will ever buy it. Only make the stuff that I hate, like bubble bath and candles that smell like sugar cookies, because then you're assured of best sellers.

I don't know why I'm so out of step. I like it, sort of, in some perverse sort of way, but it's very disappointing and demoralizing sometimes.

I bought three tubes of shower cream--Sun-Ripened Raspberry, Country Apple, and Tangerine Spice. I think they'll be okay--I've had the raspberry and apple before, and I especially like the apple, although the tangerine is a little iffy--but they're not what I wanted.
