Monday, December 18, 2000: Flood in the closet

Today started off great. I went to the linen closet this morning to get some clean towels for the bathroom, and something felt wet on my foot. The vacuum cleaner is in there, so I thought I was just touching cold metal, but no, it really felt wet. I reached down, and the carpet was wet.

I keep my stash of toiletries and cleaning products in there as well as linens, so I thought something must have fallen and leaked on the floor--but it didn't look like bubble bath or mouthwash or something like that, and it didn't smell like anything.

I started pulling blankets and packages of toilet paper out and putting them in the hall, and feeling the carpet, and it was wet all the way back to the wall.

All my rustling around woke Bob up, and he came out to see what I was doing, and I told him that the carpet in the closet was wet for no apparent reason. Neither the ceiling nor the walls were stained, like the roof had leaked, and it's on the top floor, so there isn't a bathroom or sink above.

I had to go take a shower and go to work, so Bob got the rest of the stuff out of the closet and set up a fan blowing in to dry out the carpet, and we never did figure out what the problem was. He said he thought it must be melting snow coming in through a vent along a 2x4 or something. Very disconcerting, whatever it is.
