Thursday, December 7, 2000: Hitting the beach

We got up early this morning and loaded the car, then went to The Swan hotel for breakfast--they have a nice buffet there in the mornings. We had a leisurely breakfast, then headed for the airport. We were still pretty early for Bob's folks' plane, though, so Bob's dad asked if we could stop off at Celebration to look around again, and Bob said sure, so we pulled off and drove around, then went into a few of the model homes.

The development still intrigues me. I'm not sure if it's the whole "Stepford Wives" aspect, or the Disney involvement, or probably a little bit of both, but it's really fascinating. The homes were looked at were all in the $350,000-$400,000 range; supposedly there are smaller bungalows somewhere that are under $200,000, but we couldn't find any.

The houses were beautiful, very elegantly decorated and appointed. I do like them, they're all wonderful, full of small nooks and crannies, and most of them have small pools in the almost nonexistent backyards, pools with two levels and little waterfalls. Very charming.

We looked at three or four homes, then headed for the airport and dropped Bob's parents off at the curb. There had been some concern because of the Delta pilots' work slowdown, but I had checked the flight this morning and it was still on schedule. Apparently they're having most of the problems on the weekends, because the pilots are refusing to work overtime, so we may have delays when we come home, but I guess we'll worry about it when the time comes.

After we dropped his folks off, we headed back for Disney World to pick up Bob's golf clubs, then started off for Sarasota on the Gulf Coast.

I fell asleep pretty soon after we started off, and slept the whole way--I woke up to catch my first glimpse of the ocean.

The photo is the view from our hotel room balcony.

When we got here, we dropped off our luggage, then went down to the beach for awhile, and ended up sitting at the beach bar for snacks and drinks, and just to enjoy the view.

We had a relaxing evening tonight, too. We came back to the room, and Bob took a nap (unintentionally--I was working on the computer and looked over to see him snoring on the bed in front of the television with the remote in his hand), then I woke him up a little later and we went out for dinner at Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar, a wonderful little atmospheric place for fresh seafood right on the water--wooden picnic tables with rolls of paper towels on the tables for napkins.

I had snow crab claws, and not much else. I wasn't really hungry after the snack we had at the bar this afternoon, but the crab was just right--light, and fun to eat.

It's warmer here--it will be in the low seventies for the next few days, which is just perfect. I'm going to take Bob to the golf course in the morning, then do a little bit of shopping: hit a couple of my favorite shops, then come back and sit on the beach for awhile before going back out to pick him up in late afternoon.

I'll probably let him take the car on Saturday and just hang around the beach and pool and have a completely relaxing day.

I heard from Misty today--she said she had a great time with the cats. She said Pyewacket curled up in her lap immediately, but it took Dinah a little while to warm up to her, as I knew it would. She said they all played tag last night--I'm not exactly sure what that entailed, but it sounded like they all had fun. She said Dinah talked to her, which is funny. Dinah has a tiny, squeaky voice, and she does talk more than Pye, who hardly talks at all, but when she does, she talks to Bob.

We keep saying that if we just had the cats down here, we could stay indefinitely. We keep concocting scenarios--Bob said today that we could buy a cheap Airstream and park it down here somewhere, then either drive down, or fly, and we could keep them with us then. Of course, now that I think about it, I suppose we could rent a condo or something--the worry, of course, being that if anyone else came into the unit, like a housekeeper or maid, they would let them out.

It's not really practical to think of bringing them on vacation, but that's really the only thing that keeps us from being completely content--missing the kitties.
