~~Manipulating Internet Freely~~

Saturday, August 30, 1997, 11:00 p.m.

Here, finally, is the translation of the Japanese newspaper article, which appeared in my mailbox tonight from Susan.

WOMEN IN INTERNET WORLD

Nowadays, we can see a lot of women working on Internet. Women emphasize to raise their status in society, publishers of Women's Magazine have issued any articles through the Internet and the Associations of Women have create their homepages. In the mean time, there are a lot of women who are having a good time with communicating others never net before and good use of it for their business. We have called on a woman who lives positively and works actively.

Susan (the middle of the picture) celebrated the 50th Anniversary of her parents so called "Golden Wedding Anniversary" on January, 1997. Although she lives separately from parents, she is talking to them with E-mail. "My life style changed slightly when I started using Internet. I got a lot of things, experiences through it," she said. Ms. Susan Dennis, who lives in Seattle, 48 years old, divorcee.

She opened her own homepage two years ago. She has introduced cats litterbox training and any articles whichever she has been interested in. She thanks to Internet, it has had a far reaching influence on her business and life.

Everyday, she is exchanging E-mails with a man, he is from Newzealand [sic], he is one of contributor to her homepage. She met him last summer during his trip to America.

She used to work with IBM, publishing division long ago. She earns by Internet business. She creates, operates and manages homepages. This year she's gotten big business with Micro Soft [sic]. She is not required to commute since she work on her personal computer at home.

Susan explained animatedly, "I am talking with mother using E-mail every day. She lives 3,000 mils [sic] away from me. I sending letters to mom care of the hotel whene [sic] she was traveling to England. She was surprised how I knew the fax number of hotel in England. It was easy to find out, you know I got it by Internet.

She added, When she started working in Internet and e-mail in 1980, only few women do participate. But now we can see many women spending the time with fun at the PC and E-mail.

"Willa's journal" is the Susan's favorite article. It is the homepage that Ms. Willa Klain [sic], (43 years old) created two years ago.

She is married with Bob but no children. She said "I had a dream about Tamagoc'chi [sic] last night, so I immediately access the Internet and looked for homepages telling about Tamago'chi. I found imitation Tamago'chi Games on that but, it was silly game, isn't it?" "I also realized how worthy the silence is. I'd be able to be refresh when I could find the silence in a busy day."

She just only jots what she's just felt in her daily life, but readers' column is always full of letters. For example; "I don't feel you and I was unrelated person." "I was glad to know you who can share same opinion and concept."

Particpating into Internet and telling frankly her life stimulated Susan's ambition. She said "It is interesting to tell others my honest feeling. Try to turn your feeling into word so your dream will come true. For me, I am trying to express my feeling as much as I can that I want to change it to something."

There are over 600 pages provided by women. "Women's Connection On-line" organizes women's community. They intend to discutss Politics, Economics, Health care and any type of genre. As you know, "Advancing Women," the International Network for women initiates career and introduces success story for working women.

Now, women have just started manipulating Internet freely. They look full of their life!

I've spent most of the evening reading ("The Deep End of the Ocean"). I've also been playing around with a new purse I bought today, a "wallet on a string" that I think might just work for me. I'm trying to pare down, simplify the things I carry with me each day. I tend to get obsessive about having everything with me that I could possibly need, and as a consequence my bags get very heavy. For the past few weeks I've been trying to get down to essentials.

This bag is a little small, but I really like it. It's black leather, with spaces for credit cards and checkbook, and a pouch on the back for sunglasses, although it's not really big enough. I'm going to try to do it, though. What I figure I'll do is use the little purse, but carry my attache to work, and I can put the overflow stuff--calendar, hand lotion, hairbrush--in there. And eventually maybe I can cut even that out.

I'm trying to change my mindset so that I don't always feel that I'm responsible for everything. Bob asked me for a tissue the other day, and I didn't have any, and I didn't feel guilty about it, like I once would have. I can't take care of everything, I can't be prepared for any eventuality. Life just doesn't work that way. You have to take some chances. This is a small one, but it's a step.

I bought the bag at Dillards, and since I was at the mall already I went by the rubber stamp store. But there was nothing there I wanted. They seem to be slowly converting the store into more of a store for the scrapbook crowd--it was full of stickers and scissors that cut special patterns on the edges of paper and markers and special acid-free scrapbooks. That might have been something I could have been interested in once, but not any more. This is my scrapbook now.
