This is pretty sad:

The surly t-shirt elves, along with the rest of us here, would like to thank the good-hearted lot of you who have contributed to NaNoWriMo, either by buying one of our luxurious tees or by sending in the suggested donation of $10. Between the blessed t-shirt buyers and the noble donors, we've received contributions from about 5% of 2002's participants.

5%? I'm guessing this is because only about 5% of the participants actually finished last year, but whether anyone finishes or not doesn't affect the costs of running this thing. (From the NaNoWriMo newsletter this morning.)

Story People (Angel of Mercy): Most people don't know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you don't get too comfortable & fall asleep & miss your life.

Grief has limits, whereas apprehension has none. For we grieve only for what we know has happened, but we fear all that possibly may happen. ~ Pliny the Younger From Bagatell :: Knitting in Norway

The page that justifies me, that summarizes my destiny, the one that perhaps only the attending angels will hear when Judgement Day arrives. Simply: the page that, at dusk, upon the resolved truth of days end, at sunset, with its dark and fresh breeze and girls glowing against the street, I would dare to read to a friend. ~ Jorge Luis Borges

Feast Day: November 24 Virgin runaway martyrs, 851 Patrons of the abandoned; emblem: decapitated, flowers springing from their heads)

Mary was born to Moorish parents, but her mother converted to Christianity and Flora did a well. Her brother remained an infidel and heaped abuse both mental and physical upon Flora for her Faith. She had taken a secret vow of chastity, so when she heard of her impending arranged marriage, Flora ran away, taking her friend Mary with her. Flora's brother betrayed them to the Islamic authorities, and the two runaways--an earlier, holier version of Thelma and Louise, if you will--were imprisoned, scourged, and finally beheaded.

Also at Tarot.com, I did a Tarot Readings Analysis of my past readings:

The suit of Cups, often referred to as Chalices or Hearts, dominates your selected readings. This watery suit represents the emotional and psychic aspects of life -- fantasy, imagination, feelings, love. Water, being a universal element of all life, reflects the common psyche -- the energy we all share. The watery overtone in your readings calls for you to pay attention to your basic emotional needs, to your feelings and sensitivity. Some things can't be solved through talking.

From a tarot reading I did today at Tarot.com: Daily Lesson: Eight of Buffalo
Sacrifice some privacy. Showcase your efforts; don't be shy about taking credit. The card in the Lesson position represents the personal investment or sacrifice required to derive full benefit from your current situation. The Eight of Coins in this position indicates that it is time to stand up for your work by telling the world about your ideas or displaying your artistry. The only way to convey to the world the value of your efforts is by putting your work into circulation. Now is the time to become visible to those people you have been neglecting to see, under the guise of being too busy working. No doubt your routine will be disturbed, your time of hermitage will be over. You have to embrace the risk of losing some privacy in order to get your works into the hands they were made for.

"And remember: You are an arteest, and no longer have time for things like cooking and grocery shopping and laundry. Start demanding favors and treats from friends and loved ones now. That way they'll be fully acclimated to the new you once November rolls around." NaNoWriMo.org : Breaking News

This is the one: In my dream, the angel shrugged and said, If we fail this time, it will be a failure of imagination and then she placed the world gently in the palm of my hand. Story People (Imagining World)

He kept a piece of algae behind his ear to remind him of his roots. A million years ago every place was a little place by the sea, he would say & my mind would go blank & I would swim through the day without a care in the world & it all seemed so familiar that I knew I would go back someday to my own little place by the sea. Story People (Place by the Sea)

I started this blog for myself last year when I started writing my novel. It was a place to store quotes and reminders for myself, and I didn't make it public. I worked on the novel for a couple of months, then set it aside. I'm going to start again this year, and joined NaNoWriMo as a way of encouraging myself to finish it. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to post my daily writing here, but I probably will. Why not go all the way, right?

Interview with Chris Baty (NaNoWriMo): "So this is how it starts," he writes. "The question is not whether or not you have a novel in you. You have dozens. The question is whether or not you'll stop beating yourself up long enough to let one of those novels transcribe itself on your computer. The question is whether you'll stop trying to be perfect, and start letting yourself be messy. November is not an oil painting. November is a charcoal sketch, a breathless, dashed-off line drawing. It's imperfect, but that's the point."

"Who, if I cried, would hear me among the angelic orders? And even if one of them suddenly pressed me against his heart, I should fade in the strength of his stronger existence. For Beauty is nothing but the beginning of Terror we're still just able to bear, and why we adore it so is because it serenely disdains to destroy us. Every angel is terrible." ~ Rainer Maria Rilke
