When she took his hand and led him into her bedroom, it was like the culmination of everything that was good in her life, all her dreams coming true at once. She felt no regret, no worries, no reluctance, no anxiety. He stood next to her as she lit the candles on the dresser, and when she turned to him, he cupped her face in his hands, and kissed her as if he had all the time in the world. She felt as if she was falling into him, into a space and time that had no boundaries and no end. The world began and ended in that room with the flickering candlelight and the lace curtains blowing in the soft breeze that came off the water. If she had looked up, she would have seen the full moon outside her window, but she didn’t. She looked only into his face, her eyes wide open. That beautiful face that had visited her in her dreams for so long, but that she had almost forgotten. Now that he was here with her again, it seemed impossible that he had ever been gone. She thought briefly of James, once, not with sadness, but with a fondness for something that she had lost a long time ago. He slipped her blouse off her shoulders and bent to kiss her throat. She gasped. It had been so long since someone had touched her with love, with reverance. And it was like that, a sacred thing, a prayer. She wrapped her arms around him and gave herself completely to the feel of him, to the sensation of being well and thoroughly loved. Strangely, the wings didn’t get in the way at all.
