"There is a problem with wings attached to humans of course - because if angels were the same cellular structure as humans they'd need wings about three miles wide to get air born -so I guess they must either be completely hollow or able to defy laws of physics . . ." (from an email)

I think the wings are mostly decorative--they don't need them to fly, they can materialize and dematerialize at will, and *think* themselves to other places. The wings are, oh, like a cat puffing itself up, or a peacock spreading its fan--for intimidation or courtship purposes.
